Executive physical vs annual physical: what's the difference?

An annual physical is a focused, insurance-covered checkup: vitals, a review of your health history, age-appropriate screenings, and basic labs. It typically runs 20 to 30 minutes. An executive physical is a deeper, half-day evaluation built around prevention: expanded lab panels, cardiovascular and metabolic risk assessment, body composition, and dedicated time with a physician to build a plan. One maintains; the other investigates. Many executives and health-focused patients do the executive physical once and maintain with annual physicals after.

What an annual physical covers

Your physician checks blood pressure, weight, and heart and lung function; reviews medications, family history, and screening schedules; and orders routine labs. For Medicare patients, the Annual Wellness Visit is a related but distinct benefit focused on prevention planning. It is valuable, and for many people it is enough - but it is built for a 20-minute window.

What an executive physical adds

Time and depth. Expanded labs that go beyond the standard panel, a structured look at cardiovascular and metabolic risk, body composition analysis, hormone evaluation when appropriate, and an unhurried conversation that ends with a written plan rather than a handshake. The goal is to find risk while it is still quiet.

Which one do you need?

If you are generally healthy and want to stay current on screenings, an annual physical does the job. If you want a deeper baseline - new decade, new health goals, family history that worries you, or a demanding schedule that makes piecemeal care impractical - the executive format exists for that.

Common questions

Is an executive physical covered by insurance?

Typically no - it is a cash-pay service, though individual covered components may be billed where appropriate. Ask for the full price up front.

How often should I get one?

Most people who choose one do it annually or every few years, then maintain with regular physicals in between.

What should I bring?

Your medication list, recent lab results if you have them, and your top three health concerns written down.
