Concierge medicine vs traditional primary care: what do you actually get?

Concierge medicine is primary care with a smaller patient panel and a membership fee. In a traditional practice, one physician may carry 2,000 or more patients, which is why visits run short and appointments run weeks out. In a concierge practice, the panel is a fraction of that size, so you get prompt appointments, longer visits, direct access to your physician, and time for prevention instead of just problems. Both models bill your insurance for covered medical visits. The membership fee buys access, time, and coordination, not better medicine - the medicine should be excellent in both.

What the membership actually buys

The fee is not for the medical care itself - your insurance still covers that. What changes is everything around the care: how fast you get in, how long you sit with your physician, whether you can reach them after hours, and whether someone is coordinating your specialists, labs, and hospital follow-ups or whether you are doing that yourself.

What stays the same

A concierge physician orders the same labs, reads the same imaging, and follows the same clinical guidelines. Medicare and most major insurance plans still apply to covered services. Anyone who implies the medicine itself is "better" is selling you something. What is genuinely different is the time and attention the structure allows.

Who it tends to fit

People who value fast access, manage multiple conditions or medications, travel seasonally and need coordination across states, or simply want a physician who knows their history without re-explaining it every visit. It is a service-level decision, not a medical one.

Common questions

Does concierge medicine replace my insurance?

No. Your insurance still covers medical visits, labs, and imaging. The membership covers the enhanced access and coordination layer.

Can I use Medicare with a concierge physician?

Yes. Medicare covers your medical care as usual; the membership fee is separate and covers non-covered amenities like extended visits and direct access.

Is it worth it if I'm healthy?

That depends on how much you value access and prevention. Many healthy members join precisely because longer visits catch things earlier.
